When Was the First Ford F-150 Made: Ford F-150 Model History

When was the first Ford F-150 made? The F-150 came out in 1975 due to the fuel crisis mentioned above. It is an iteration of a long line of Ford F-Series. Explore the history of Ford F-150 trucks, here, and learn more about this popular Maple Grove truck:

First Generation Ford F-Series (1948-1952)

The first generation, Ford F-1, was part of a lineup ranging all the way to the ‘Big Job,’ a Ford F-8. This model had plenty of updates that set the stage for the future F-Series. It’s funny to think about it now, but the first-generation technological advances included foot-operated windshield wipers.

Second Generation Ford F-Series (1953-1956)

This generation brought around the Ford F-100 while this did involve some significant updates, it also was a renaming process. The F-2 became the F-250, and the F-350. The updates to this model included a 239 V-8 engine, updated chassis, complete redesign, optional power steering, seat belts, radio, cigarette lighter, and dome light.

Third Generation Ford F-Series (1957-1960)

The redesign of this generation brought about a new, but significant, boxy shape. The 1957 model year brought on double the headlights, the clamshell front end, flat sides, and the ability to remove the rear fenders. Another impressive shift in this generation was the addition of four-wheel-drive, making its debut in the 1959 model year.

Fourth Generation Ford F-Series (1961-1966)

During the fourth generation, the F-Series engines start to reach upward of 200 horsepower. The marketing and design shifted towards more recreational use at this point, and a variety of luxury features are added.

Fifth Generation Ford F-Series (1967-1972)

The Ford Ranger and Ford XLT trim show up during the fifth generation. They also bring in an updated frame, factory-installed air conditioning, 302 V-8 engine (1969), Camper Special introduced (1972), and optional AM/FM radio.

Sixth Generation Ford F-Series (1973-1979)

Six generations in, you may be wondering, when was the first Ford F-150 made? Finally, in 1975 the sixth generation brought about the Ford F-150. This model was designed as a heavy-duty option that would eventually replace the F-100.

Seventh and Eighth Generation Ford F-Series (1980-1991)

In 1984 the F-100 series was replaced by the F-150 as the light-duty choice in the Ford truck lineup. This was due in part to the advent and more popular usage of plastics, galvanized and light steels, and aluminum as common products in the manufacturing process.

Why is the Ford F-150 the best-selling truck on the market? Well, it’s possibly due to the redesign that took place with the seventh generation. The F-150 was not only becoming more reliable, but retaining a modern and sleek design. In 1977 the F-150 took first place as the best-selling truck on the American market, and it remains there to this day.

Ninth to Thirteenth Generations of the Ford F-Series (1992-Present)

Why is the Ford F-150 the best-selling truck on the market? Well, there have been a lot of changes since 1992. It’s seen plenty of iterations, but has remained not only the best-selling truck, but the best-selling vehicle in the United States. We are now seeing the first-ever electric Ford F-150 Lightning. It goes to show that no matter what you are looking for from your truck, the F-150 can accommodate every Minnetonka driver.
